A frail little maiden, not quite nine years old, was sent by her parents out into the cold

But all were too eager to pass on their way, she could not prevail upon any to stay

Yet many had dear little girls of their own, to whom cold and hunger were sorrows unknown

So into a corner she timidly crept, and there for a short time she fitfully slept

She untied the bundle and took out a match, and then 'gainst the wall she just gave it a scratch

(Effect) And there in the midst stood a tall Christmas Tree, which she and some other girls danced round with glee

(Effect) Her grandmother bent, and then laid the poor child upon her warm bosom, while sweetly she smiled
