3. What information do we collect and why?

a. General use of our site

  • We use Google Analytics to record and analyse anonymous data on the usage of our site, including technical details such as your approximate geographical location, web browser used, IP address and operating system, and the parts of our site that you visit. This data is only used to understand how our site is being used, and does not include any personal details relating to you or anyone else.
  • When you use the Contact us facility of our website, your name and email address are required to enable us to respond to your enquiry. We do not collect or store this information, other than in the normal functions of our and your email programs, and will not use it to contact you on any other subject.
  • Otherwise our website does not record or collect any personal data about you as you browse and search its content.

b. User accounts for editing or adding to our database

  • Access to our database for editing or adding the information it contains is only available to authorised users who have a Lucerna user account, accessed with a personal username and password.
  • For these users only, we collect your name and email address, along with the username and password that we allocate to you. This data is stored securely, protected by password access and encryption, and only accessible to our website administrators.
  • Our website records each occasion you log in to your user account and each time you save any changes or additions you make to the database.
  • This data is only used:
    • to enable us to contact you should we need to (for example to query or discuss changes you have made to the Lucerna database);
    • to mark any changes you make to the database, so that we can identify authorship;
    • to display in our website the authorship of each relevant database record.
    • to allow us to track unauthorised access, should it occur.

c. Recording of individuals within our database

  • By its nature, the historical research information contained in our database and displayed in our website includes details of many identifiable individuals. This includes personal details such as dates and places of birth and death, addresses, occupations and other activities relating to the history of the magic lantern and related media.
  • However we do not collect or display these personal details about any individual known or believed still to be alive. Living people are only recorded within our database to allow reference to their relevant activities in the field (for example, as authors of books or articles) where such information is already in the public domain.
